Aim to be parked within the first hour. At a market that opens at 8:00 AM that means arriving by 9:00; at one that opens at 9:00 AM, by 10:00. Most Dallas-Fort Worth markets run a four hour block, so the difference between arriving at the start and in the middle is a full table versus a picked-over one.

Before you set an alarm, find out which of four shapes your market has. That check does more for the trip than anything in the tote.

\## The 8:00 to noon pattern

This is the default in DFW. Fourteen Saturday markets in the directory run exactly 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM: [Azle](/markets/azle-farmers-market), [Cleburne](/markets/cleburne-farmers-market), [Coppell](/markets/coppell-farmers-market), [Saint Michael's](/markets/saint-michaels-farmers-market) and [White Rock](/markets/white-rock-farmers-market) in Dallas, [Bluebonnet Market](/markets/bluebonnet-market) in Ennis, [The Clearfork Farmers Market](/markets/the-clearfork-farmers-market) in Fort Worth, [Keller](/markets/keller-farmers-market), [Lake Worth](/markets/lake-worth-farmers-market), [Lucas](/markets/lucas-farmers-market), [Mansfield](/markets/mansfield-farm-cottage-market), [Rockwall](/markets/rockwall-farmers-market), [Saginaw](/markets/saginaw-farmers-market-at-switchyard) and [Cowtown](/markets/cowtown-farmers-market) in White Settlement. Two more run the same block with seasonal changes, [Mabank](/markets/mabank-farmers-market) and [McKinney at Chestnut Square](/markets/mckinney-farmers-market-at-chestnut-sq).

Four hours is short, and three things happen inside it, in order.

\*\*The first hour\*\* is when small-lot items exist: the eggs, the one flat of berries, the bread a baker drove in with. These are not restocked, and ten dozen eggs is the whole supply.

\*\*The middle two hours\*\* are the fullest tables and the longest lines. If you are shopping volume rather than scarcity, this is a good window, and the crowd is the only cost.

\*\*The last half hour\*\* is what is left, plus the best chance of a vendor preferring your money to another hour of loading. Some tents start breaking down before the posted close.

Pick one deliberately. Arriving at 10:15 with a specific list gets you none of the three.

\## The 9:00 to 1:00 markets

Ten Saturday markets shift everything an hour later: [Downtown Arlington](/markets/downtown-arlington-farmers-market), [Cedar Hill](/markets/cedar-hill-farmers-market), [Denton Community Market](/markets/denton-community-market), [Kaufman County](/markets/kaufman-county-farmers-market), [Four Seasons Market at Castle Hills](/markets/four-seasons-market-castle-hills) in Lewisville, [Downtown Mesquite](/markets/downtown-mesquite-farmers-market), [Midlothian](/markets/midlothian-farmers-market), [Sachse](/markets/sachse-farmers-market), [Watauga](/markets/watauga-farmers-market) and [Wylie](/markets/wylie-farmers-market). Two Sunday markets use the same block, [Fair Park](/markets/fair-park-farmers-market) and [Tietze Park](/markets/tietze-park-farmers-market) in Dallas.

The shape is identical, just moved. The only trap is showing up at 8:30 to a lot where vendors are still unfolding tables. That is not an early advantage, it is standing around.

\## The late-day exceptions

A handful of markets run past lunch and change the calculation:

A long day is not a long produce day. A grower with one truckload at a market closing at 5:00 PM still sells out of the good things before noon. Treat the extra hours as time for bread, prepared food and browsing, not permission to arrive late for produce.

The evening markets invert the logic. [Celina Friday Night Market](/markets/celina-friday-night-market) and [Moonlight Market on W. Houston](/markets/moonlight-market-on-w-houston) in Sherman run 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and [Downtown Mesquite](/markets/downtown-mesquite-farmers-market) and [The Urban Market](/markets/the-urban-market) in Garland switch to evening hours in the hottest months. Nothing is running out at 6:15. Expect a street event more than a grocery run.

\## Hours that move underneath you

Several markets change their hours through the year, which is the most common way a plan falls apart. The Clearfork shortens to 9:00 AM to noon in winter. McKinney opens at 9:00 AM January through March and 8:00 AM April through December. Downtown Arlington runs 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in summer and 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM otherwise. Midlothian extends to 3:00 PM in peak season, and Mabank to 2:00 PM on fifth Saturdays and through winter.

Cadence moves too. Coppell runs every Saturday most of the year but only the second and fourth Saturdays in January, February and March. Check the market's own page the night before.

\## What to bring, keyed to when you go

\*\*Going in the first hour:\*\* small bills. Lines are shortest early, and card readers depend on the vendor and the cell signal at an outdoor lot.

\*\*Buying eggs, meat or dairy, or staying out afterwards:\*\* a cooler in the trunk with ice in it.

\*\*Going in the last half hour:\*\* leave the list at home. Bring one large bag and decide what you are cooking on the way back.

\## A workable morning

For an 8:00 AM market, leave the house in time to park by 8:30. Walk the whole market once with your hands empty, about ten minutes at most DFW markets. Buy the scarce things first, produce second, animal products last, then leave. That is a forty-five minute trip, and it beats a two hour one that started at 11:00.
